The Regional Spectral Model (RSM) originally developed at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) has been used extensively in regional downscaling of coarse resolution forecasts, analyses and simulations, which is one of the hottest topics in atmospheric modeling. Since the NCEP global atmospheric model in GFS will be implemented operationally in horizontal resolution of about 25km this year, it is time for regional modeling to move from regional scale (~20 to ~40km) to mesoscale (~5 to ~20) by using a nonhydrostatic version of RSM. Thus, one of the major purposes of this year's workshop is to introduce a nonhydrostatic version of RSM (called MSM) with user training. The remaining purpose of this workshop is, as usual, to provide opportunities for the RSM community to exchange their findings of regional downscaling modeling by using different versions of RSM. Those versions are (1) the Spectral GSM and RSM merged system (G-RSM) at Scripps, (2) NCEP RSM and MSM, (3) RSM at IRI, (4) GSM, RSM and MSM at Yonsei University, (5) CWB RSM at CWB, (6) RSM/MSM at NDU, and others. Furthermore, the RSM workshops are designed to gather together international regional model developers and users, to learn the latest modeling features being developed. Through these discussions we wish to formulate future plans for RSM development. Thus, this workshop does not exclude participation by modelers other than GSM, RSM, and MSM users. In fact, we strongly encourage people engaged in other models to attend, compare results, and discuss general regional model-related problems.

In addition to general presentations, we will set aside a half day for a special topic: climate change downscaling -- and targeted process studies with the RCM. The RCM is a useful downscaling tool to elucidate mechanisms of regional climate change, by potentially better-resolving important local processes and circulation features, and providing the ability to isolate the role of large-scale influences through the lateral boundaries. Evaluation of the fidelity of the processes relevant to climate variability and change over a region is important for providing credibility to statements that changes attributable to these processes are important to our future projections. We will invite guest speakers on this topic, and encourage participants to submit abstracts on this theme as well.

Short Courses

Three subjects will be covered during the training course; (1) using the nonhydrostatic model for weather and climate, (2) downscaling of seasonal forecast, and (3) demonstrate how to build personal cluster for running RSM/MSM. This will involve lectures, demonstrations and performing computations and analysis on site. All computational facilities will be provided. Currently, the first and last days are reserved for the training course. The extra evening time may be used for question/answer for building a personal cluster.

The abstract should also contain your email address. If there are multiple authors, please specify who will be the presenter. Include this information in the body of the email. We will put the abstract of your work on the web.
